The Criminal Investigations Division is charged with investigating major crimes that are time sensitive, require a specific specialty, or would take more time to investigate than a member of the Road Patrol Division can devote. Most CID cases are felony investigations; however, complex or time-consuming misdemeanor investigations may also be assigned. The division also handles internal investigations and background investigations of prospective employees.
The Criminal Investigations Division is staffed by a team of Deputies all of whom have demonstrated an aptitude for detailed investigative work. Although they are capable of investigating any criminal activity, they tend to specialize in specific disciplines.
The Division is comprised of two components:
Investigators assigned to Criminal Investigations are highly trained in a number of areas including crime scene investigations, sex offenses, assaults, homicides, crimes against children, crimes against the elderly, auto theft, financial crimes, white collar crimes, evidence collection, insurance fraud, accident investigations, and computer crimes.
Investigators assigned to Narcotics / Vice Investigations are responsible for investigating crimes related to illegal drug trafficking, gambling, prostitution, and alcohol-related crimes. Investigators in this unit also investigate crimes that involve the illegal use, sale, or purchase of prescription drugs. The abuse of prescription drugs in the United States presents a public safety and public health problem, and, as such, is a focus of law enforcement.
Since 2009, the Criminal Investigations Division has included an on-staff Crime Scene Technician who works under the supervision of and in conjunction with Investigators of the Criminal Investigation Division. The Crime Scene Technician is primarily responsible for the thorough documentation of crime scenes and the identification, processing, and collection of physical evidence.
The Cyber Squad within the Criminal Investigations Division includes a Digital Forensics Investigator who investigates cybercrimes, performs forensic examinations of digital evidence, and provides technical assistance with investigations where technology is a significant element of the crime. Our Digital Forensics Investigator also serves on the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.
The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for conducting follow-up investigations into crimes reported in Pottawattamie County and works closely with neighboring law enforcement agencies to increase law enforcement presence and effectiveness within our communities. By serving on multi-jurisdictional task forces and participating in information-sharing networks, our investigators have access to excellent resources for solving crimes, identifying crime trends, and sharing information.
